High praise for new men's centre

17 August 2010

Words cannot describe how helpful the Tauawhi Tairawhiti Men’s Centre has been for one Gisborne man.

"If there is a better word than fantastic, tell me and I'll use that word," says Whakaora (not his real name).

The new centre offers men a safe place to have time out and receive support.

Whakaora had personal problems and anger management issues to deal with. He said: "I definitely needed to talk to someone and the men's centre gave me that. The sessions I've had there are fantastic... they're brilliant.

"When you’ve got a problem, if you haven't got the right person to talk to, that problem just gets bigger and bigger. It festers inside you."

Centre co-ordinator Tim Marshall says the centre is going 'pretty well', with more than 20 men calling in since it opened in Peel Street last month.

Whakaora says he is learning to control his emotions and take ownership of his anger. He does not plan to stop going anytime soon. "I'm not cured but I now know where I'm heading," he said.
