It’s not OK Visible in Tararua

04 May 2010

The message that Family Violence is not OK is hard to miss in the Tararua community these days.

Display boards with a montage of posters displayed on them have been produced and are proving popular. They are 900cm by 600cm and brightly coloured, and can be displayed indoors or outdoors.

Laminated posters are also available.

A new billboard is up at the A and P showgrounds with a locally developed message: Family violence is no road for your families' future.

The local newspaper The Bush Telegraph is printing banners on the front cover most weeks and larger ads appear throughout the paper. This all supports the ‘violence free relationship' theme being promoted for 2010.

The Campaign's exhibition It's Time We Started Telling These Stories recently toured the district, showing at libraries in Dannevirke, Woodville, Pahiatua and Eketahuna.

Librarians reported a healthy interest by members of the public taking time to stop and read the stories displayed. Other books related to family violence were displayed alongside the exhibition.

"Libraries have a lot of foot traffic, so it's a good place for people to see these stories in artwork form and read them as well," Tararua Family Violence Campaign Coordinator Diane Clayton said.

She has noticed an increase in requests for resources around family violence.

"This is encouraging as people are making an effort to ask for resources that support their agency's needs and to stock up again when they are all distributed.

"It's good to see the community back the campaign by their willingness to make public what was once a ‘private matter'."
