Local Government

Local Government can play an important part in raising awareness and understanding of family violence and making new Zealand a safer place. Many councils and Mayors are already involved in work that is making a difference in their communities and there is a growing willingness from many more councils to get involved. Every community is different and will do things in a different way but sharing information, ideas and resources provides a starting point for others who want to get involved.

The campaign has developed a Local Government toolkit that highlights case studies and includes learning from some councils involved in work to prevent family violence. It also includes a media pack for Mayors who want to speak out in the media about family violence.  The media pack includes key messages, statistics and specific days throughout the year that present media opportunities to speak out about family violence.
