If you are worried about yourself, your relationship, someone you know, or about things that are happening in your community, there is support available

Ask for help from someone you trust – your friends and family, your doctor, an understanding employer or colleague.

Ask for help from a family violence service.

  • A list of some of these services is on page 30
  • In many communities there are organisations that work specifically with Mäori, Pacific, refugee and migrant communities
  • For a list of services in your local area, go to www.familyservices.govt.nz/directory/index.jsp or call 0800 456 450.

For concerns about child abuse and neglect contact Child, Youth and Family on 0508 326 459 or www.cyf.govt.nz

If you have experienced abuse or violence, you can get legal protection. Go to the Family Court, a family violence service, or a lawyer for information about protection orders.
Go to www.justice.govt.nz/family

You can call the Family Violence Information Line on 0800 456 450 for information and support.

If you want ideas about what you can do to help prevent family violence in your community www.areyouok.org.nz has useful information and links.

Before you decide where to go for help, here are some things you might like to find out:

  • What experience in working with family violence does the service/person have?
  • What will it cost?
  • What sort of service will they offer – will you be in a group; will it be individual, couple or family work?

Most services require you to go and talk to someone, but you can often phone first and get more information before you meet.
